Tarrant County Precinct 2 Commissioner Alisa Simmons will host the 3rd Annual Kidney Wellness and Health Expo in March, offering free kidney disease and breast cancer screenings to local residents. The event is organized in collaboration with the National Kidney Foundation Serving Texas, UT Southwestern Moncrief Cancer Institute, Tarrant County Public Health, and the Mid-Cities (Texas) Chapter of The Links, Inc.
The expo is scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tarrant County Sub-Courthouse in Arlington. Attendees will have access to a range of health services including low-cost flu shots for adults and children, preventive health education sessions, community resource vendors, kidney-healthy food samples, a KidsZone for families, and complimentary lunch.
Commissioner Simmons highlighted her personal connection to the cause: “I’m a Chronic Kidney Disease patient. So, this effort is very important to me,” she said. “Too many people are walking around with kidney disease and unaware they have it until they’re in advanced stages and need a transplant. Early detection is critical to prevent this from happening.”
Chronic Kidney Disease affects an estimated 35 million adults nationwide. Medical experts note that African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander populations face higher risks due to increased rates of high blood pressure and diabetes among these groups.
The event aims to connect attendees with local physicians specializing in kidney disease detection as well as diet experts. Registration is available through Eventbrite or by calling (817) 248-6099.
Recent data shows that during the 2023-24 school year Tarrant County had a decrease of 1.2% in its at-risk student population compared to previous years; however, it still ranked third highest statewide for total at-risk student enrollment according to the Texas Education Agency (https://tea.texas.gov/). Hispanic students made up the largest ethnic group within county schools at 42.9%, followed by White students at 25.1% (https://tea.texas.gov/).
