Republican state Senator Kelly Hancock has announced his candidacy for the position of Texas state comptroller. This announcement comes on the heels of his recent appointment as chief clerk to the current Comptroller Glenn Hegar. With Hegar set to step down in June to assume the role of chancellor at the Texas A&M University System, Hancock is positioned to serve as interim comptroller.
Hancock’s entry into this senior role within the comptroller’s office is seen as advantageous for his campaign in what is expected to be a competitive Republican primary next year. In support of Hancock’s qualifications, Hegar stated, “Kelly is a great fit to serve as the chief financial officer of Texas.” He highlighted Hancock’s contributions during his tenure in the Texas Legislature, including shaping financial policy and authoring conservative spending cap legislation.
Hancock emphasized his commitment to conservative principles, particularly regarding border security. He noted his early advocacy against in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants, a policy change recently enacted by the state. In his campaign statement, Hancock declared, “For over a decade, I’ve fought for Texas taxpayers in the Legislature, cutting red tape, passing conservative budget reforms, and holding government accountable.” He further promised that as comptroller he would ensure tax dollars are spent “wisely, transparently, and responsibly.”
