Fort Worth pushes for slot machines to be classified as illegal

A city in Texas is pushing for eight-liners, a type of slot machine, to be classified as illegal lotteries. 

The city of Fort Worth went before the Texas Supreme Court on Jan. 28 to argue that slot machines should be made illegal, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. This push comes after Fort Worth City Council passed a number of ordinances in 2014 that sought to put regulations on game rooms, as residents of the area feared that they were responsible for attracting crime.

Following this push by Forth Worth, operators of eight-liners are filing lawsuits against the city, alleging that this state law pre-empts already present local regulations. 

Game room business owners are legally permitted to run eight-liners if the prizes are anything other than cash, or if they are cash are under $5. 

As slot machines require no skill to play, it is argued that they are more practically similar to playing the lottery, which are won by chance, not skill,
