There's good news for Elrod's Cost Plus Supermarket shoppers: Lone Star Cards can now be used for fresh fruits and vegetables through the new Double Up Food Bucks program.
According to an article from the City of Fort Worth, the Lone Star Card can now be swiped at the Elrod's north Fort Worth location to receive 50% off of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligible produce. Eligible SNAP users can get up to $10 in produce savings per day with the new program, which is being funded by the Blue Zones Project Fort Worth and North Texas Healthy Communities.
We have seen a dramatic increase in those who are struggling to put food on the table, much less being able to afford healthy options like fresh fruits and vegetables,” Matt Dufrene, vice president of Blue Zones Project Fort Worth/North Texas Healthy Communities, said. “Elrod’s is a family-owned business that saw this need and is partnering with us to improve the health of this community and make a difference in the lives of its customers.”
The Double Up Food Bucks program was introduced at the Cowtown Farmers Market this year.
“The Double Up Food Bucks initiative advances our supermarket’s overall mission – we feed families for life,” Don Benefield, executive vice president of G.E. Foodland, said. “We are passionate about supporting the community and promoting healthy meals that can be shared together.”
The north Fort Worth Elrod's is located at 1524 N.W. 25th St., and the program will soon come to the Foodland Markets at South Ayers Avenue and 3320 Mansfield Highway.
