The UT Arlington women's basketball team will take on NCAA Tournament participant Oklahoma in the 2022 Maggie Dixon Classic in Fort Worth on Sunday, Nov. 20, inside Schollmaier Arena on the campus of TCU.
It is the second opponent announced on the Lady Mavs 2022-23 schedule, last week UTA announced that they will welcome in the 2021 National Runner-Up in Arizona on Wednesday, Dec. 21, inside the College Park Center.
"This is another great opportunity for our program as we add another excellent program to our schedule," said head coach Shereka Wright. "We are honored to compete in the Maggie Dixon Classic and so excited to have an event so close to home for our fans to attend."
The Maggie Dixon Classic is held annually in memory of the former Army Black Knights women's basketball coach. On April 6, 2006, the women's college basketball community lost a young Maggie Dixon, who died from an undiagnosed heart condition. Over the course of her six months as head coach at the United States Military Academy, she led the program to unprecedented heights; the Black Knights played in their first Patriot League Championship and Dixon led her team to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
It will be the 14th meeting between the Lady Mavs and Sooners and the first since 2013. OU holds a 10-3 advantage in the all-time series and has won the last two contests over the Lady Mavs.
Tickets to the Oklahoma contest and other single games will be available for purchase at a later date. Season ticket deposits are available now and can be purchased by clicking the link above. The full non-conference schedule as well as the complete Western Athletic Conference schedule is still being finalized and will be announced at a later date.
The Lady Mavs are coming off arguably their best season in program history, claiming the Sun Belt Conference Championship and battling 3rd-seeded Iowa State in the NCAA Tournament in Ames, eventually falling just eight points shy of becoming the first 14 seed in NCAA history to ever win a game in the tournament.
During the 20-8 season, UTA claimed the program's first-ever win over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 13 South Florida, 61-56, on Dec. 2, 2021. In just her second season with the Lady Mavs, Shereka Wright was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year, in addition to also garnering Texas Coach of the Year by Dave Campbell's Texas Basketball.
Junior Starr Jacobs earned Sun Belt Player of the Year after becoming the first player in Lady Mavs history to average 20 points per game or more (21). Jacobs also scored 28 points in each of UTA's three tourney games in Pensacola to be named Sun Belt Tournament MVP.
