Stephen F. Austin split the doubleheader against Seattle University today, winning the first game 2-1 and dropping the second game 4-2. SFA moves to 15-14 (4-2 WAC) and SU moves to 22-10 (3-3 WAC).
Game 1
Alexis Telford started on the mound for the 'Jacks in the second game of the series. She stranded two runners on base in the first two innings and then the following two innings were three up, three down. The first score of the game came in the bottom of the fourth as Gaby Garcia hit a solo shot to left center which gave the Lumberjacks the lead, 1-0. Seattle tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. Bottom of the seventh with the game tied at one, the 'Jacks needed to get some baserunners for a chance to walk off the game. Kelby Robbins got the bats going with a single to center field, then Emily Land hit another single to put runners on first and second. Camryn Middlebrook stepped up to the plate with two runners on, one out, and lined a single to left center to load the bases for Lexi Benson. Benson hit a single up the middle to drive in the game-winning run, 2-1.
Garcia and Robbins led the team with two hits each, Garcia and Benson each recorded one RBI. Telford pitched her sixth complete game of the season and earned her seventh win of the season. She allowed three hits, one run, and struck out seven batters.
Game 2
Brooke Gainous started the final game of the series for SFA. The first two innings flew by as both pitchers were dealing early. The 'Jacks were able to get on the board first after Mallory Webb singled through the right side which scored Robbins from second, 1-0. SU tied the game in the top of the fourth and took the lead in the top of the sixth. SFA answered back in the bottom of the sixth as Benson stepped up with a runner on second and rocketed a double to left center which scored Middlebrook, 2-2. Seattle scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead and win the game.
Middlebrook, Benson, Webb, and Mackenzie Bennett each recorded a hit, with Benson and Webb each recording an RBI as well. Gainous pitched another complete game, allowing eight hits, four runs and struck out one batter.
SFA will head to Cedar City, Utah next weekend for a series against the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah. The series will start with a doubleheader on Friday, March 31st at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. central time.
