Tarrant County Public Health Department has informed the City of Fort Worth that several West Nile virus-positive mosquito samples have been confirmed throughout the city. There have now been 13 positive tests citywide this year.

On Monday, Dallas County reported the state’s first human case of West Nile virus infection for 2023. The patient is a male resident of Dallas and was diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease.

Mosquito prevention tips

It’s extremely important that residents work together to reduce the mosquito population by removing mosquito habitats from their property, and remind their neighbors to do the same.

The most effective means of protection, even more than spraying, is to stay focused on reducing the mosquito population:

• Remove standing water in empty flower pots, pet bowls, outdoor toys, gutters, etc.
• Residents can help by keeping the grass mowed and trees trimmed.
• Maintain your swimming pool.
• When you’re outdoors, remember to wear insect repellent that contains DEET.
• Wear clothing with long sleeves and pants when possible.

How the City is helping: Continued vigilance when it comes to preventing the spread of mosquito viruses is essential.

• Since there have been West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes in certain neighborhoods, the City’s Code Compliance officers will be monitoring those areas to look for pockets of water that could invite mosquitos to breed and nest.
• If there’s an issue with standing water at a location that is not City property, report it to the City’s Customer Care Center at 817-392-1234.
