Fort Worth City Council has approved an agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation for two Safe Routes to School projects at two Fort Worth elementary schools. These projects aim to improve pedestrian facilities and provide safe walking routes to school, ensuring the safety of students.

Why it matters: The City’s Transportation & Public Works Department is dedicated to improving the safety and mobility of pedestrians, with continuous evaluation of known traffic, school and pedestrian safety concerns within Fort Worth. The City serves over 150 schools, and crossing guard times vary based on site location, school type and school pedestrian traffic.

By the numbers:

  • Funding for A.M. Pate Elementary Safe Routes to School project is $1,896,476, of which $771,944 is the City’s responsibility. City funds are transferred from the 2022 Bond Program Fund.
  • Funding for A.V. Cato Elementary Safe Routes to School project is $2,617,402, of which $936,021 is the City’s responsibility. City funding will be transferred from the 2022 Bond Program.
The big picture: The projects are part of the 2022 Bond Program and will contribute to the overall improvement of the City’s transportation infrastructure. The projects are scheduled for bid in late 2025, with construction beginning in early 2026.
