Texas Republicans are preparing for a competitive primary season, the most intense in over ten years. With elections scheduled for March 2026, races for three key statewide positions—U.S. Senate, attorney general, and state comptroller—are already becoming contentious.
The contest for state comptroller is particularly notable following the resignation of state Sen. Kelly Hancock from the Legislature on Thursday. Hancock announced his candidacy to succeed Glenn Hegar as state comptroller. Hegar is stepping down to take on the role of chancellor at Texas A&M University System. This marks the first time since 2014 that there will be no incumbent in the race for comptroller.
