The 2026 GOP primary in Texas is expected to bring significant changes to the state’s Republican political landscape. New candidates are entering the scene, while some seasoned politicians are pursuing different positions.
There are at least three statewide offices anticipated to have competitive GOP races with uncertain outcomes. These contested races have already caused divisions within the party and led to a battle for endorsements among some of Texas’s leading Republicans.
One notable contest is the race for comptroller. Former state Senator Kelly Hancock from North Richland Hills has been appointed as chief clerk at the comptroller’s office and will assume leadership when Hegar leaves this week. Following his appointment, Hancock announced his candidacy for comptroller and resigned from the Senate. Governor Abbott has endorsed Hancock in the primary.
