The race for Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts has gained a new contender. State Senator Kelly Hancock, representing North Richland Hills, has announced his candidacy for the position. This comes after his recent appointment as the agency’s chief clerk.
Hancock emphasized his legislative experience in his campaign announcement. “For over a decade, I’ve fought for Texas taxpayers in the Legislature, cutting red tape, passing conservative budget reforms, and holding government accountable,” he stated. “As Comptroller, I’ll make sure your tax dollars are spent wisely, transparently, and responsibly.”
Highlighting his previous roles, Hancock said, “As Chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs and Border Security Committee, I worked alongside Governor Abbott and President Trump to help build the Texas border wall, support Operation Lone Star, and stop illegal immigration. Texans deserve a Comptroller who understands the link between fiscal strength and public safety, and I have the record to back it up.”
His campaign launch also included a video outlining his background in both business and public service.
The role of Texas comptroller is crucial as it involves overseeing state finances including budget management, tax collection and remittance processes, state investments, among other responsibilities assigned by the Legislature. A significant task ahead for the next comptroller will be managing the newly passed education savings account program from the 89th Legislative Session.
The current Comptroller Glenn Hegar will vacate his position in July to take over leadership at the Texas A&M University System.
