A senior analyst with the investment firm Morningstar predicted renewable energy will become ever more important in a piece titled "The Renewable Future."
Travis Miller acknowledged the still small part renewable energy plays in the large scale energy game, but he expects its growth will outpace what some have predicted.
Currently, renewable energy ]accounts for only about 10 percent of the total energy portfolio in the United States, but its popularity is increasing, and more demands are being made to attempt to eliminate the use of fossil fuels in the next decade in favor of power generated by the sun, wind, and water.
"We expect U.S. renewable energy – mostly wind and solar – to climb 8 percent annually during the next decade, reaching 22 percent of total electricity generation," Miller said.
With tech reaching into the world of sustainability to further its research and appeal to the public and coal and gas firms working to fight obliteration, Miller said Morningstar expects growth to exceed the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which he said has "a history of underestimating renewable energy growth."
Miller also predicted that politicians who back sustainability will have more success, and ]those who fail to catch up to speed will be left in the dust.
"Utilities that can harness this renewable energy growth will win big for investors; those that lack public support and struggle to execute will be left behind," Miller said.
