Dr. Barbara Odom-Wesley, Arlington City Council District 8 at-large representative, recently joined nearly 200 local leaders from across the country to attend the National League of Cities (NLC) Summer Board and Leadership Meetings that were held in Atlanta and Memphis.
NLC is the largest and most representative organization for cities, their elected leaders, and municipal staff, and advocates for city priorities in Washington by building strong federal-local partnerships. This meeting brought together members of the NLC Board of Directors as well as its Federal Advocacy Committees and Member Councils to discuss issues facing municipalities including workforce development, violence, climate change, infrastructure, housing, homelessness, and equity.
Attendees also learned about ongoing advocacy related to the American Rescue Plan and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Earlier this year, Dr. Odom-Wesley was reappointed to a one-year term as vice-chair of the NLC’s Transportation & Infrastructure Services Committee.
“It is an honor and a responsibility to represent Arlington in this national setting. The knowledge I gain working alongside thought-leaders and studying best practices for city concerns and issues benefits my service on City Council and ultimately, Arlington,” Dr. Odom-Wesley said. “Additionally, I enjoy being a cheerleader for Arlington and bragging about our successes!"
The National League of Cities was instrumental in securing direct aid to municipalities through ARPA and advocated for the passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. NLC is now supporting cities, towns, and villages with resources and tools to implement federal funding in their communities.
