This week, Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX), Chairwoman Emeritus of the House Appropriations Committee, and Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) introduced the Women Who Worked on the Home Front Memorial Location Act in Washington. This bipartisan bill proposes the National Mall in Washington, D.C. as the location for a memorial dedicated to the American women who worked on the home front during World War II.
Congresswoman Kay Granger stated, “It’s long past time we honor the important contributions women made during World War II. Through this monument, visitors to Washington, D.C. will learn of the great sacrifices American women made to ensure that the service members on the front lines had everything they needed to succeed. I am proud to lead this legislation that will honor their efforts and help ensure better representation for women in our nation’s capital.”
Congresswoman Debbie Dingell added, “Our Rosies answered the call when our nation needed them most, redefining the role of the American woman and opening the door wider for generations to come. This bill will take us one step closer to ensuring our Rosies receive the recognition they deserve, and I am honored to lead legislation to honor their service and commitment to America and their unwavering ‘can do’ spirit. We will always be thankful for their strength, bravery, and lasting impact on our nation.”
The proposed bill is part of a decade-long effort to properly honor more than 18 million pioneering women who served as riveters, pilots, engineers, electricians, mechanics, code breakers among other roles during World War II. The passage of the Women Who Worked on the Home Front Memorial Location Act would mark another step towards constructing this monument after Congress passed legislation in 2022 approving its establishment.
