After more than 50 years as a graduate and professional serving institution, on Monday, Aug. 22 The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth opened its virtual doors to the first class of students in the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences program. This 100% online program provides an accessible, affordable option for students who have earned 60 hours of core credits to complete their bachelor’s degree through the School of Biomedical Sciences at HSC.
“This program offers a path for students to earn a degree that sets them up for success entering the workforce in a biomedical field or applying to an advanced science or professional health care program such as medical, dental, veterinary, and pharmacy schools,” said Michael Mathis, Ph.D., EdD, Dean of HSC’s School of Biomedical Sciences. “With our curriculum structured in accelerated 8-week semesters with all classes and labs conducted asynchronously, our students can complete their degree in as little as one year while maintaining their commitments to work and family life.”
The flexibility of the program is crucial for one of the members of the first class and is what ultimately drew him to the program.
“I work as an EMS Supervisor with a local company and maintain a very busy schedule keeping up with school, work, and family,” said Ethan Rummel, a first-year undergraduate student. “The program provides the perfect opportunity for me to finish my degree quickly, and the flexibility of this online program makes it easy for me to manage my daily responsibilities, working a job and finishing school. It seems only fitting for me to continue my education with a local school in the city where I was born and raised.
“I plan to graduate amongst my peers of the initial cohort in the fall of 2023,” Rummel continued. “After graduation, I will apply to my number one choice of medical schools to hopefully continue my education at HSC in the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, and to journey further into my future in medicine.”
